Although bewildered, she becomes entranced as she walks through his mansion that is fit to serve as a hotel. Joon Pyo later admitted that the makeover was $100,000, and that price is nothing to him and she can have everything she would ever want. Their merciless, short-tempered ringleader, Goo Joon Pyo, in his twisted form of “love” and courtship, without a word, has his men literally kidnap Jan Di by putting chloroform over her face and she wakes up to a massage from multiple women, followed by a complete body waxing and makeover until she reappears in an over-the-top dress, sparkly jewelry, and sky-high heels. To begin, seemingly no matter how much F4 bullies and terrorizes, every girl in the school follows them around like puppies with sparkles in their eyes, shrieking whenever one of them enters a room. While this highly popular 2009 Kdrama got almost nothing but glowing reviews from audiences around the world, it fails to ever mention how absurd and female-oppressive its storyline truly is.

Her parents, specifically her mother, are more than elated at the idea of Jan Di finding a rich husband and rely on that expected fantasy to save them from their debt. Jan Di’s dry cleaning family is no exception they are overwhelmed with excitement when Jan Di is offered a shady scholarship. The fantasy-like ShinHwa high school is then shown, in which every Korean family wishes their children to attend and envy those who do. The very first scene of the opening episode showers the viewer with money and prestige, building up just how wealthy the international ShinHwa Group is, and even gave a solid number of a $10 billion revenue in exports. Viewers get a sense of fantasy from the very opening credits as the characters seem 2-Dimensional in posed pictures surrounded by sparkles, hearts, flowers, and diamonds. Throughout the over-done twenty-five episodes of the Korean drama, Boys Over Flowers, Jan-Di faces seemingly endless obstacles as she represents the Korean sister of a real life Cinderella.
